This professional learning opportunity will help current and future component leaders have the necessary skills to find success in their position. The aim is to provide excellent stewarding of existing music programs, as well as the championing of better opportunities for aspiring musicians. It will be held July 16-19, 2023 and applications are now being accepted!
Volunteers, adjudicators, or any person who has been hired or who volunteers to work with or around minors or students at an FSMA-sanctioned event must fill out and submit an acknowledgment form indicating that they have read and understood or been trained on this FSMA policy. A short video training is now available.
All band directors at FSMA member schools are eligible for free access to this course from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) produced in partnership with Bands of America, DCI, Music for All, Varsity Athletic Band, and WGI. It goes beyond just weather and extreme temperature precautions and also covers topics such as emergencies, injury prevention, equipment considerations, and travel.
Marching Band Directors and Staff should be reminded that rehearsals associated with marching band are just as rigorous as athletic practice and deserve equal care. We recommend scheduling outdoor rehearsals during the early morning and evening to avoid the hottest part of the day, allow students to carry personal water bottles, and provide regular breaks to replenish water and cool off in the shade. FSMA provides opportunities for realistic and constructive program evaluation through the sponsorship of solo-ensemble and large group Music Performance Assessment (MPA) events organized by the Florida Bandmasters Association, Florida Orchestra Association, Florida Vocal Association, and the Florida Music Education Association. Most MPA events are open to the public, and the community is encouraged to attend.

During the legislative sessions, FMEA & FSMA work to advocate on behalf of our members to protect and promote quality comprehensive music education in all Florida schools.
